Safety of quinine in pregnancy with a focus on first trimester use: a systematic review
Review Question
To describe the toxicity of quinine on the fetus when used in pregnancy.
Study Type Included
Articles either from malaria endemic and non-malaria endemic countries will be included. Articles on quinine used for any purposes will be included. Case reports or case series will be included. Animal studies will not be included. Articles without pregnancy outcomes will also be excluded.
Condition Being Studied
Quinine, safety, pregnancy, fetal, congenital abnormality.
Participant
Inclusion: pregnant women who have been treated with quinine irrespective of trimesters, but with a strong intention to discern gestation of ingestion, diseases, and intentions of use. Exclusion: non-pregnant patients.
Animal

Intervention
Quinine: either given orally or parenterally.
Comparator Control
Women not exposed to quinine during pregnancy.
Main Outcome
Congenital abnormalities among fetuses whose mothers have been treated with quinine in any trimesters during pregnancy. The time of exposure: the primary interest is the events after exposures to quinine in the first trimester. Measures of effect Proportion, relative risk or risk difference.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Miscarriage and stillbirth after quinine exposure in pregnancy. Measures of effect Proportion, relative risk or risk difference.
