What is the effectiveness and safety of topical treatment with medium-potency corticosteroids and PUVA photodynamic therapy (therapy with psoralen plus ultraviolet A radiation) for the treatment of dyshidrosis in adult patients aged 18 to 59 years?
Study Type Included
Randomized and non randomized clinical trials. Exclusion: epidemiological studies, review articles and articles published in a language other than English or Spanish
Condition Being Studied
Dyshidrosis (pompholyx) is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory disease, a condition characterized by vesicles or blisters without underlying erythema affecting the lateral faces of fingers, palms and soles. It is often associated with hyperhidrosis. In histology, fluid is trapped under the stratum corneum in the form of taut white blisters resembling grains of rice; Spongiosis, hyperkeratosis, hypergranulosis, intraepidermal spongiotic vesicles are observed. The acrosiringio of the sweat glands is not altered. Patients usually have itching and burning.
Participant
Inclusion: Patients older than 18 years, <59 years with clinical and/or histological diagnosis of dyshidrosis/pompholyx.

Intervention
Treatment with topical medium potency corticosteroids and treatment with psoralen plus ultraviolet A radiation (PUVA).
Comparator Control
Direct and indirect comparisons between treatments with medium-potency topical corticosteroids and PUVA.
Main Outcome
Clinical improvement assessed by a dermatologist using Dyshidrotic Eczema Area and Severity Index (DASI). Measures of effect None
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Recurrence after treatment, treatment adverse effects, patient satisfaction, and quality of life. Measures of effect None
