- Title
- Systematic review of the effects of Bifidobacterium lactis CNCM I-2494 in fermented dairy product by lactic acid bacteria on gastrointestinal discomfort in the general population
- Review Question
- Is a fermented milk product that includes Bifidobacteria animalis ssp lactis CNCM I-2494/DN-173010 and lactic acid bacteria effective in reducing gastrointestinal discomfort in the general adult population.
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: All the types of interventional studies (e.g. randomised controlled trials) as well as observational studies (e.g. cohort, case-control studies) will be considered for this review. Exclusion criteria: Descriptive observational studies such as case reports or case series.
- Condition Being Studied
- The condition under investigation is minimal GI discomfort in adults. Minimal GI discomfort excludes irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diagnosed functional bowel disorder or significant intestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disorder (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, pouchitis), coeliac disease, and colon cancer.
- Participant
- Included participants are adults (aged 18 and over) with minimal GI discomfort. Exclusion criteria: 1) infants and children; 2) people who are seriously ill; 3) people with IBS, diagnosed functional bowel disorder or significant intestinal disorder; 4) people who are wholly healthy (i.e. without GI symptoms).
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Inclusion criteria: Fermented milk product that includes Bifidobacteria animalis ssp lactis CNCM I-2494/DN-173010 and lactic acid bacteria (any dose) consumed for at least two weeks. Exclusion criteria: A fermented milk product that includes Bifidobacteria animalis ssp lactis CNCM I-2494/DN-173010 and lactic acid bacteria combined with other functional ingredients such as prebiotics or vitamins.
- Comparator Control
- Eligible comparators: A control product which may include other live bacteria, such as yogurt cultures. A control product can be: • non-fermented dairy products without probiotics with same taste, colour appearance (to allow double-blinding); • the heat-treated active product (i.e. the bacteria are not alive in the control product and the probiotics (living Bifidobacteria bacteria) are compared to dead bacteria in the same dairy matrix); • another fermented milk product without “active” probiotics (e.g. a standard yoghurt without the Bifidobacteria). Ineligible comparators: • a fermented milk product that includes Bifidobacteria animalis ssp lactis CNCM I-2494/DN-173010 and lactic acid bacteria combined with additional ingredients, such as prebiotics, which are different to additional ingredients included in the intervention. • Standard yoghurts containing Bifidobacteria; • Other prebiotics.
- Main Outcome
- Global assessment of GI discomfort using a single integrated question including overall assessment of digestive symptoms (eg adequate or satisfactory relief) or overall assessment of GI wellbeing / GI discomfort / GI comfort. Composite score comprising at least two of the following individual digestive complaints: 1) Abdominal pain/discomfort 2) Cramp 3) Bloating 4) Borborygmi [rumbling] 5) Flatulence If no composite score is reported, but at least two individual digestive complaints from the list above are reported in the publication or study report, a composite score will be calculated.
