Title
Effect of proanthocyanidins on blood pressure: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Review Question
Hypertension a common chronic disease that can lead to serious health problems, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and stroke. Previous studies have not drawn a consistent conclusion about effect of proanthocyanidins on blood pressure. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of proanthocyanidins on blood pressure.
Study Type Included
randomized controlled trials
Condition Being Studied
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) present, nowadays, the main burden on healthcare systems worldwide, especially in the developing world. According to the World Health Organization survey, CVD is also the major leading cause of death in the world, accounting for 17.7 million deaths annually, the number that is expected to rise to nearly 23.6 million by 2030. Hypertension is a common chronic disease that can lead to cardiovascular disease and increase risk for other diseases. Therefore, prevention and treatment of hypertension are particularly important for improving the quality of life of the population. Since pharmacological treatments always have a consequence of side effects, nutrition intervention in the treatment of diseases is getting more and more attention. In non-hypertensive and prehypertensive adults, dietary intervention could be considered as an effective approach to prevent hypertension and related complications and reduce the incidence of mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular diseases.
Participant
First, studies were imported into End-Note software, version X9 and duplicate publications were removed. Then, two authors(JQA and HYY) reviewed remained manuscripts separately by reading title, abstract or full text. Finally, original studies were included if they met the following inclusion criteria: (i) study design: randomized controlled clinical trials, (ii) intervention: proanthocyanidins supplementation, (iii) population: adult participants(age≥18 years), (iv) measured outcomes: systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Exclusion criteria were: (i) treatment duration less than 2 weeks, (ii) without any comparing control group, (iii) lack of sufficient data. During the study selection process, any differences of opinion between authors were resolved by discussion with a third authors (JYR).
