Title
Evaluating the upper limit of alanine transaminase levels in Asians
Review Question
What is the upper limit of normal alanine transaminase (ALT) in Asians?
Study Type Included
Cross-sectional studies or cohort studies that present ALT values for patients in whom NAFLD, viral hepatitis and alcoholic liver disease have been excluded. Inclusion criteria 1) Adult patients (aged>=18) in Asia; 2) Studies which have included ALT readings; 3) Studies which have excluded NAFLD by ultrasound; 4) Studies which excluded viral hepatitis and significant alcohol consumption. Exclusion criteria 1) Irrelevant: articles that do not match the inclusion criteria.
Condition Being Studied
Serum ALT levels are commonly used to evaluate for the presence of liver disease. The conventionally used upper limit of normal is 40 IU/L, based on data from the 1980s. This was established prior to the onset of hepatitis C testing, and without the exclusion of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The true upper limit of normal of ALT is yet to be defined in Asians.
Participant
Adult patients (aged>=18) in Asia with available ALT values, and in whom NAFLD, viral hepatitis and alcoholic liver disease have been excluded.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Upper limit evaluation for alanine transaminase levels in Asians.
Comparator Control
Not applicable.
Main Outcome
Pooled means and upper limits of normal ALT values in Asians without NAFLD, viral hepatitis and alcoholic liver disease. Measures of effect As given in the source documents.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
We plan to investigate the pooled mean and upper limit of normal ALT values in the following subgroups: obese, male, female, diabetic patients. Measures of effect As given in the source documents.
Study Method
Diagnostic, Epidemiologic, Meta-analysis, Systematic review
