- Title
- Incidence of crack propagation in root dentine of human permanent teeth using Rotary Nickel Titanium instruments – A Systematic Review
- Review Question
- What is the incidence of crack propagation in root dentine in human permanent teeth using Rotary Nickel Titanium instruments?
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: • In vivo studies • In situ studies using a cadaver model • In vitro and ex vivo studies conducted on extracted human permanent teeth. • Root canals prepared with Nickel Titanium rotary files • Crack evaluation done using dye penetration , digital microscope , cutting edge microscopic imaging , stereomicroscope , scanning electron microscope(SEM) or Micro computed tomography. • Articles published from to 2000 to 31st December 2020. • Articles published in English Exclusion criteria: • Studies not on human teeth. • Studies on deciduous teeth. • Root canals prepared with stainless steel instruments. • Root canals prepared with hand instruments. • Root canals prepared with reciprocating instruments. • Studies involving retrograde root canal treatment procedure. • Evaluation of dentinal cracks after the root canal filling procedure. • Studies involving retreatment. • Articles in which only abstracts are available.
- Condition Being Studied
- The nickel–titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments have highly improved the quality of cleaning and shaping of the root canals. Rotary instrumentation also requires less time to prepare canals as compared to hand instrumentation. However, NiTi instruments are still associated with an inherent risk of development of dentinal cracks .It is speculated that these micro-cracks or craze lines can later propagate into vertical root fractures (VRFs) if the tooth is subjected to repeated stresses from endodontic or restorative procedures which would lead to failure of treatment. The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate the incidence of crack propagation in root dentine using Rotary Nickel Titanium instruments.
