- Title
- Nickel titanium spring vs elastomeric chain in orthodontic space closure: a systematic review
- Review Question
- Is nickel titanium spring more effective than elastomeric chain in closure of premolar extraction space?
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: randomized controlled trials, trial with split mouth design.Exclusion criteria:Clinical reports, review articles, opinion articles, animal models and in vitro researches
- Condition Being Studied
- Orthodontic treatment more often requires extraction and premolar is the most commonly extracted tooth. Extraction is followed by space closure which is often performed with sliding or loop mechanics. Force is applied in sliding mechanics by elastomeric chain or nickel titanium coil spring or active ligatures. Elastomeric chain and nickel titanium springs are widely used for space closure in sliding mechanics. This protocol is planned to review the effectiveness of these two methods in orthodontic space closure.
- Participant
- Patients being treated with preadjusted edgewise appliance requiring extraction of premolar and subsequent space closure.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Nickel titanium coil spring for space closure. Inclusion criteria: Preadjusted edgewise appliance. Completion of initial levelling and alignment. Upper and lower rigid stainless steel wire placed for at least 4 weeks.
- Comparator Control
- Elastomeric chain for space closure
- Main Outcome
- Rate of space closure Measures of effect The total amount of space closed is divided by the number of months (or 4 weeks) taken for the closure
