- Title
- Effectiveness of cysteamine use in the treatment of melasma: a systematic review with meta-analysis
- Review Question
- What are the consequences of using cysteamine in the treatment of melasma. PICO: P (Participants): melasma carrier; I (Intervention): cysteamine treatment; C (Comparison): without restrictions on comparison; O (Outcomes): skin depigmentation.
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: (i) Observational and experimental studies; (ii) Published in the English language; (iii) Available as a complete article, which meets the search criteria and investigates the effects of cysteamine treatment on melasma with consequences for the face skin. (iv) Restrictions will be imposed on the publication year (2011-2021). Exclusion criteria: (i) Studies published in a language other than English; (ii) studies including results not related to melasma (iii) replies, editorials, letters, reviews, abstracts, comments or brief communications.
- Condition Being Studied
- The treatment of melasma is complex and involves reducing melanocyte proliferation and inhibiting melanosome formation. To now a number of methods have been introduced for the treatment of melasma, including medicinal methods, laser and light-based therapies, as well as a combination of them, but the impact of none of them is fully understood and they have limited utility.
- Participant
- Melasma patients.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Cysteamine treatment.
- Comparator Control
- Standard care.
- Main Outcome
- Investigate the effects of cysteamine on melasma. Measures of effect A meta-analysis will be performed to evaluate the effect of using cysteamine to treat melasma using the mean difference between pigmentation scores before and after treatment. To evaluate the occurrence of adverse effects, a meta-analysis will be performed for each adverse effect reported using the odds ratio before and after treatment with 5% cysteamine. Overall statistical analyses will be performed using Review Manager Version 5.4 software (The Cochrane Collaboration, 2020). Heterogeneity will be assessed using the Qe/2 test. If high and significant heterogeneity is detected in the studies (p <0.05), a random effect model was adopted; otherwise, a fixed effect model will be used.
