- Type 2 diabetes is characterised by relative insulin deficiency caused by pancreatic β-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance in target organs. Type 2 diabetes is frequently associated with both extracellular and intracellular magnesium (Mg) deficits. A Mg deficit or an clinical hypomagnesemia is common in patients with type 2 diabetes, especially in those with poorly controlled glycemic profiles.

- This review included studies that assessed parameters related to magnesium supplementation in patients with type II diabetes. The following criteria were used for exclued the studies: review articles, books chapters, studies that did not evaluate parameters of interest and studies performed with animals.

- Individuals diagnosed with type II diabetes, supplemented with magnesium, in order to assess the impacts of magnesium deficiency and its supplementation on DM2 characteristics.
