- Title
- The effect of red yeast rice supplementation on metabolic syndrome: a systematic review andmeta-analysis
- Review Question
- Is red yeast rice supplementation improve metabolic syndrome?
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: Randomized controlled trial (RCT), controlled trial, clinical trial, randomized trial. Exclusion criteria: Case report, case series, review, animal experiments.
- Condition Being Studied
- metabolic syndrome
- Participant
- Inclusion criteria: Patients were included if they had metabolic syndrome and the components of the syndrome: elevated fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, blood pressure and waist circumference, regardless of their age, sex, or nationality. The diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome should have met at least one of the international or domestic guidelines. Exclusion criteria: Patients were excluded if they had acute myocardial infarction, severe arrhythmia, heart failure, hepatic failure, renal failure, or acute infection.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Inclusion criteria: Studies including the use of red yeast rice or xuezhikang (plus any or no other intervention) in metabolic syndrome. No limitations on blinding, dosage or treatment duration. If an add-on study design was applied, patients in the treatment group should have been treated with the same type and dosage of conventional therapy under the same standard as was used in the control group. Exclusion criteria: Studies not including the use of red yeast rice or xuezhikang in metabolic syndrome treatment.
- Comparator Control
- Inclusion criteria: All comparators (placebo, no intervention or conventional therapy) will be accepted. Exclusion criteria: Studies not including a comparator.
- Main Outcome
- triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), blood pressure (BP), blood glucose, waist circumference. Measures of effect odds ratios
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), Body Mass Index (BMI), impaired glucose tolerance, HbA1c%, fasting insulin, insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), cardiovascular events, adverse events. Measures of effect odds ratios, relative risks.
