- Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects of bixa orellana on wound healing: a systematic review
- Review Question
- Does the bixa orellana act as a modulator of the tissue repair process in rats? Context and rationale Based on Bixa orellana's phytotherapeutic activities, we have suggested murine models of interest that present some kind of damage to the epidermis, such as tissue injuries, or internal injuries, so that they can be treated for healing using bioactives from the annatto. Studies with in vitro tests will also be included, as they present in their outcomes the assessment of biocompatibility of concentrations and doses of Bixa orellana biocompounds.
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: Animal studies: studies that compare treatment with Bixa orellana in animals treated with placebo, drug or herbal medicine will be included. Controlled studies with separate treatment groups will be included. In vitro studies: studies that compare the cell line treated with bixa orellana with untreated, drug-treated or herbal lines are included. Exclusion criteria: Animal studies: studies that do not compare the animal treated with Bixa orellana with another animal model treated with placebo, drug or herbal medicine will be excluded. In vitro studies: studies that do not compare the cell lineage treated with Bixa orellana with the lineage that did not receive this treatment, or were treated with a drug or herbal medicine, will be excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- Participant
- Animal
- Inclusion criteria: For animal studies: animals such as rats and mice (Rattus novergicus, Mus musculus, Wistar) that present induced skin injury, adults and males will be included. For in vitro studies: cell lines of keratinocytes, fibroblasts and/or melanocytes will be included, so that they can be used to calculate the dose of the compound to be used and cytotoxicity tests. Exclusion criteria: For studies with animals: studies that do not use rats and/or mice (Rattus norvergicus, Mus musculus, Wistar), female animals and that do not present skin injury will be excluded. For in vitro studies: studies in which the analysis of cell line types does not apply will be excluded.
- Human Disease Modelled
- The effects of the intervention on wounds, whether chronic or not, will be analyzed. The healing process involves steps such as inflammatory, proliferation or granulation and remodeling. The effects of biocompounds on these main steps will be analyzed, so that it is possible to verify their performance in tissue repair.
- Intervention
- Inclusion criteria: For animal testing, we considered studies that used bixa orellana for wound healing. Associations with other herbal medicines were allowed, as long as the outcomes related to bixa orellana were well described. For in vitro assays, we considered those that analyzed the cytotoxicity of biocompounds, in order to determine the dose to be used in the animal sample. Exclusion criteria: Studies that not used bixa orellana for wound healing were excluded. Associations with other herbal medicines were allowed, as long as the outcomes related to bixa orellana were well described. In vitro assays that did not analyze the cytotoxicity of bixa orellan biocompounds were also excluded.
- Comparator Control
- Inclusion criteria: Placebo, bixa orellana associated with other herbal medicines and cytotoxicity of bixa orellan biocompounds. Exclusion criteria: that is not Placebo, bixa orellana associated with other herbal medicines or cytotoxicity of bixa orellan biocompounds
