Title
A systematic review of Glycyrrhiza glabra on cognitive function and memory in preclinical studies
Review Question
What is the effect of Glycyrrhiza glabra on cognitive function and memory in preclinical studies ? Context and rationale Glycyrrhiza glabra, herbal folk medicine has been used commonly around the world as a natural sweetener and medicine. Its root and rhizome are used in dried form and are suggested to have positive effects on the brain and are commonly used to treat depression and stimulating agent for memory. Glabridin, Glycyrrhizic acid, glycyrrhizin (composed of a subunit of glycyrrhetinic acid and two subunits of glucuronic acid), isoliquiritigenin, glabridin, liquiritigenin, and licochalcone are the key components of the plant that are known to impart numerous therapeutic effects. For instance, extracts of licorice have been reported to have inhibiting effects on the secretion of Aβ and enhancing cognitive deficits. However, research articles and complete meta-analysis concerned with the various effects of Glycyrrhiza glabra on neuroinflammation, cognitive and anti-neuroinflammatory impairments are still lacking and has not been explored to their fullest capacity. Therefore this comprehensive study is planned to address the role of Glycyrrhiza glabra on the enhancement of cognitive brain functioning to further improve or refine existing knowledge by exploring studies done in animal models.
Study Type Included
Inclusion criteria: Preclinical studies with control group randomized, non-randomized study design Exclusion criteria: Pre-post design
Condition Being Studied
Participant
Animal
Inclusion criteria: All animal models for the study of Cognitive function and memory, all species of animals irrespective of age and sex Exclusion criteria: Clinical studies, in vitro and in silico studies
Human Disease Modelled
Memory is the mental capacity of retaining and reviving facts, events, impressions, etc., or of recalling or recognizing previous experiences. Cognition pertains to how a person understands the world and acts in it. It is the set of mental abilities or processes that are part of nearly every human action while we are awake.
Intervention
Inclusion criteria: Treatment with Glycyrrhiza glabra formulations and extracts in any dosage form in any time and any frequency Exclusion criteria: Polyherbal preparations of Glycyrrhiza glabra, Glycyrrhiza glabra along with other drugs
Comparator Control
Inclusion criteria: Animal models for the study of cognitive function and memory and memory impairement treated with standard treatment/placebo/vehicle control/healthy animal control Exclusion criteria: Animal models for the study of cognitive function and memory treated with other herbal drugs
Main Outcome
Outcome Measure
Inclusion criteria: Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, scopolamine-induced amnesia, learning and memory parameters, Neuro-Inflammation and Neuro-Oxidative Stress, cholinergic transmission in the brain Exclusion criteria: Rest criteria for the study of cognition and memory
