Condition Being Studied
Xerostomia is the subjective sensation of dry mouth and is usually (but not always) associated with salivary hypofunction. A drug or substance that increases the flow of saliva is called a salivary gland secretion. The condition is so common that it is often seen as a side effect of multiple medications. It is more common in older people (mainly because this group tends to take several medications) and in people who breathe through the mouth. Dehydration, radiation therapy involving the salivary glands, chemotherapy, and several diseases can lead to reduced salivary production (reduced salivary production), or changes in the consistency of the saliva, leading to xerostomia. Sometimes can not find out the specific reason, there may be psychological reasons caused. A conservative estimate of prevalence is about 20% in the general population, with increased prevalences in females (up to 30%) and the elderly (up to 50%). Estimates of the prevalence of persistent dry mouth vary between 10 and 50%.
Participant
Inclusion: The patient had xerostomia and was not currently taking other medications for xerostomia Exclusion: patients undergoing radiotherapy of the head and neck, chemotherapy, or maxillofacial surgery to remove all or part of the main salivary glands.

Intervention
Our clinical intervention applied a topical sialogogue containing 1% malic acid to treat patients for 2 weeks.
Comparator Control
Patients were given a placebo with the same presentation and composition (excepting malic acid).
Main Outcome
Dry Mouth Questionnaire (DMQ) was used to evaluate xerostomia levels before and after product/placebo application. Measures of effect MD (mean difference)
