- Title
- Ginseng for preventing and treating the common cold: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
- Review Question
- To determine whether Korean ginseng or American ginseng are effective at either preventing or treating the common cold
- Study Type Included
- Randomised controlled trials in which children, adults or elderly with the common cold are treated with Korean ginseng (P. ginseng) or American ginseng (P. quinquefolius). We will exclude studies comparing the two different forms of ginseng.
- Condition Being Studied
- The common cold is the most prevalent infectious disease worldwide. On average, adults experience the common cold two to four times a year, and children experience it 6 to 10 times. The typical symptoms of the common cold are nasal stuffiness and discharge, sneezing, sore throat and cough. The typical symptoms of the common cold are nasal stuffiness and discharge, sneezing, sore throat and cough.
- Participant
- We will include trials with the following types of participants. For the prophylaxis trials, healthy individuals (children, adults and elderly) will be included. For treatment trials, children, adults and elderly with the common cold will be included. We will exclude trials of patients with the flu or those with patients who are immuno-compromised or taking multiple medications.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Trials that included extracts of Korean ginseng (P. ginseng) or American ginseng (P. quinquefolius) or commercial products made from Korean ginseng or American ginseng, regardless of age, processing status (for example, fresh ginseng, white ginseng or red ginseng) or dose. We will exclude trials that included Panax notoginseng (P. notoginseng), which is a Chinese medicinal herb. There is already a Cochrane Review for Chinese Medicinal herbs for the common cold.
- Comparator Control
- We will compare placebo controls to ginseng therapies used alone or in combination with other conventional treatments.
- Main Outcome
- For the prophylaxis trials, the rate ratio of occurrences of the common cold after at least one week of prophylactic ginseng administration will be the primary outcome. For the treatment trials, the primary outcomes will be the duration (days of suffering from cold episodes) and severity of common cold episodes and the duration of cold symptoms such as rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, sneezing, cough, sore throat, scratchy throat, hoarseness, head congestion, chest congestion and feeling tired.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Secondary outcomes will include safety issues that are raised any time during the study periods after the initiation of ginseng administration.
