- Title
- Mechanistic insights into the effect of lutein on atherosclerosis, vascular dysfunction, and related risk factors: a systematic review of in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro studies
- Review Question
- To gain new insights into the effects of lutein on cardiovascular risk factors beyond antioxidant activity. The research question has been designed in accordance with PICOS: P (Population): vascular cells or other cells from the subjects with CVD, animal or human model; I (Intervention): treatment with lutein; C (Comparator): no treatment, a placebo or standard treatment; O (Outcome): the effect of lutein; S (Study design): in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo and clinical trials.
- Study Type Included
- Original studies were considered for inclusion if they met the following inclusion criteria: 1) Published in English language journals; 2) In vivo and in vitro studies; 3) Investigating the effect of lutein on CV-related risk factors; 4) Including markers of CVD including endothelial function, lipids, hemodynamic, glycemic and inflammatory measures. Studies in which lutein has been combined with other types of supplements will be excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the main cause of death worldwide. The most important risk factors of CVD include dyslipidemia, high blood pressure, inflammation and hyperglycemia. In this review, we will survey the effects of lutein primarily on these risk factors.
- Participant
- Human studies: all human studies that investigated the effect of lutein on cardiovascular-related risk factors. (Studies involving animal models, vascular cells or other cells from subjects with CVD will also be included.)
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Lutein.
- Comparator Control
- Comparators: no treatment, placebo or standard treatment.
- Main Outcome
- The effects of lutein on cardiovascular risk factors beyond antioxidant activity, as assessed in terms of: endothelial function, lipids, hemodynamic, glycemic and inflammatory measures. Measures of effect None
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Carotid wall thickness none Measures of effect None
