- Antitumoral Activity of Limonene: A Systematic Review Emphasizing its Antitumoral Mechanisms
- Review Question
- What mechanisms are involved in the anti-tumor activity of limonene in experimental models? Context and rationale Cancer is a complex genetic disease that is a major public health problem worldwide, accounting for about 7.6 million deaths each year. Many anticancer drugs currently used clinically have been isolated from plant species or are based on such substances. Accumulating data has revealed anticancer activity in plant-derived monoterpenes. D-limonene is recognized as a potential chemotherapeutic agent, however, the details of this mechanism is still poorly understood. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to understand the mechanisms of action already outlined for limonene in order to optimize research in antitumor treatment.
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: For animal study: No restrictions on the types of study design eligible for inclusion. For cells: No restrictions on the types of study design eligible for inclusion. Exclusion criteria: No restrictions on the types of study design eligible for exclusion..
- Condition Being Studied
- Participant
- Animal
- Inclusion criteria: For animals: Any experimental model involving cancer For cells: Tumor cell lines Exclusion criteria: Human studies
- Human Disease Modelled
- Cancer Pharmacology
- Intervention
- Inclusion criteria: For both animals and cells studies: Inclusion criteria: Any type of pure limonene treatment (We will not consider dosage, method, timing, and frequency. As long as the research groups used pure limonene as treatment to treat the animals, we will include these studies.) Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria: Not pure limonene treatment; plants or essential oils that contain limonene.
- Comparator Control
- Inclusion criteria: For both animals and cells studies: Inclusion criteria: untreated, vehicle treated, or treated with a different intervention Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria: all other control conditions; use limonene as control.
- Main Outcome
- Outcome Measure
- Inclusion criteria: For both animals and cells studies Inclusion criteria: Any molecule that is part of a limonene antitumor cell signaling pathway. Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria: Indirect measures that do not show the possible mechanism of action of limonene.

- Other Selection Criteria
- For both animals and cells studies Inclusion: 1. Studies with limonene in its pure and isolated form; 2. Studies with proposing activity mechanisms. Exclusion: 1. Not pure limonene treatment; plants or essential oils that contain limonene; 2. Studies other than the limonene; 3. Duplication of data and titles and/or abstracts not meeting the inclusion criteria; 4. Limonene with other studies uncovering the current topic; 5. Articles not available or not made available by the corresponding author.
