Title
Lithium treatment effects on calcium and parathyroid hormone concentrations: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
In which degree does lithium treatment increase calcium and parathyroid hormone plasma concentrations?
Study Type Included
Double-blind clinical trials using any pharmacological comparator (placebo or other drugs) will be included. Longitudinal open-label trials (with or without comparator group) and case series of at least 5 participants will also be included.
Condition Being Studied
Changes in calcium and parathyroid hormone concentrations after starting lithium therapy
Participant
Patients with a psychiatric diagnosis (bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, major depression and other psychiatric diagnoses) receiving lithium therapy
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Lithium treatment
Comparator Control
All studies including repeated measures (baseline and follow-up) in calcium or PTH will be considered. Controlled (placebo or other drugs) and uncontrolled trials will be included in the systematic review. Randomised, controlled clinical trials will be included in the meta-analysis.
Main Outcome
Change in calcium plasma concentrations from baseline to the last available follow-up. Measures of effect Standardized mean differences (Hedges' g)
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Change in parathyroid hormone plasma concentrations from baseline to the last available follow-up. Development of hypercalcemia after starting lithium therapy. Measures of effect Change in parathyroid hormone plasma concentrations: Standardized mean differences (Hedges' g) Development of hypercalcemia: proportion (all studies) and odds ratio (randomised, controlled trials).
Study Method
