Study Type Included
Inclusion: - Experimental studies, randomized and controlled trials and observational studies such as cohort studies, cross-sectional, and case-control studies to review the evidence in intervention studies on the effect of supplementation with leucine, either alone, together with other supplements or together with other supplements and physical exercise in the elderly with sarcopenia. - Articles in which at least one of the diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia is measured, such as muscle mass and / or muscle strength and / or physical performance. - Experimental articles in which the supplement dose administered to the study subjects was specified or could be calculated. Exclusion: - Articles in which the study population is less than 60 years old. - Articles in which a placebo group is not included. - Articles that are made on animals and the results are reflected for the treatment of the elderly with sarcopenia.
Condition Being Studied
Older adults are at a greater risk of developing sarcopenia due as a result of reduced mobility, malnutrition, dietary changes, and select diseases. Currently, there are no systematic reviews analyzing the effects of supplementation with leucine alone or as part of a supplement, either with physical exercise or without in the elderly with sarcopenia.
Participant
Inclusion: adult with sarcopenia over 60 years of age (diagnosed by any recognized diagnostic criteria). Exclusion: articles in which the study population in less than 60 years old.

Intervention
The objective of this study was to search for the different existing interventions in which the study population were older adults diagnosed with sarcopenia, both ambulatory and hospitalized, who were supplemented with leucine, either independently, together with another supplement or with physical exercise, and that at the same time, this population or control group is compared with another population that was administered placebo, comparing the different changes in the main sarcopenic markers such as muscle mass, muscle strength and functionality. The systematic review includes all those articles based on experimental studies, randomized and controlled trials and observational studies such as cohort, cross-sectional and case-control studies in which the improvement of at least one of the diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia was measured, such as muscle mass and / or muscular strength and / or physical performance.
Comparator Control
Control group. Supplementation with leucine alone, together with another nutrient or with physical exercise. Placebo group. A group of patients different from the control group who were not exposed to supplementation with leucine alone or leucine together with another nutrient. In the studies where the control group received physical exercise, the placebo group received the same exercises but without taking leucine supplementation alone or with another nutrient.
Main Outcome
- Change in muscle strength after supplementation with leucine alone, together with another supplement or physical exercise, measured from the beginning of the study to the end of it, measured by the grip tension test and the chair support test. Compared with the placebo group who underwent the same tests. - Change in muscle mass or muscle quality after supplementation with leucine alone, together with another supplement or physical exercise, measured from the beginning of the study to the end of the study, measured through the increase or decrease in skeletal muscle mass appendicular using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) test; measuring predicted whole body muscle mass by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) test. Compared with the placebo group who underwent the same tests. - Changes in physical performance after supplementation with leucine alone, together with another supplement or physical exercise, measured from the beginning of the study to the end of the same through different tests such as the walking speed test, the short physical performance battery test (SPPB), the timed test (TUG), the 400 meter walk test or long distance hall walk (400 m walk). - Change in bone mineral density after supplementation with leucine alone, together with another supplement or physical exercise, measured from the beginning of the study to the end of the study, measured by the dual energy X-ray absorptiometry test (DEXA), Computed tomography (CT) test, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test. Compared with the placebo group who underwent the same tests. - Change in insulin sensitivity after supplementation with leucine alone, together with another supplement or physical exercise, measured from the beginning of the study to the end of it, measured by the oral glucose tolerance test. Compared with the placebo group who underwent the same tests. - Changes in respiratory function after supplementation with leucine alone, together with another supplement or physical exercise, measured from the beginning of the study to the end of it by means of the spirometry test. Compared with the placebo group who underwent the same tests. - Changes in quality of life after supplementation with leucine alone, together with another supplement or physical exercise, measured from the beginning of the study to the end of the study, measured by the summary test of the mental component SF-36 and the test of Physical Component Summary (PCS).
