- Title
- Effects of Leucine-enriched amino acid/whey protein supplement and exercise intervention on Sarcopenia in older adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
- Review Question
- To examined whether Leucine-enriched amino acid/whey protein supplement and exercise intervention improve muscle strength, mass, and performance in sarcopenic older adults
- Study Type Included
- RCT
- Condition Being Studied
- The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) defines sarcopenia as a muscle disease (muscle failure), and characterized by low muscle strength, low quality and quantity of muscles and impaired physical performance of the elderly. The treatment of choice for sarcopenia is still resistance exercise with nutritional supplementation because no pharmacological agents to treat sarcopenia have not become available yet. Leucine-enriched amino acid or leucine-enriched whey protein is one of the most common interventions for treating sarcopenia in older individuals. Leucine is an essential branched-chain amino acid that it has been shown to modify protein turnover in skeletal muscles by decreasing proteolysis and increasing protein synthesis. However, there is insufficient evidence concerning the effect of Leucine-enriched amino acid/whey protein supplement combined exercise intervention on sarcopenia indices, such as muscle strength, mass and performance.
- Participant
- Elderly people (over 65 years old) with sarcopenia (Considering the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People I and II criteria).
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- A population of sarcopenic elderly people will be intake Leucine-enriched amino acid/whey protein. They also need to perform resistance training or exercise.
- Comparator Control
- Given a placebo that consisted of an isocaloric or diet. They also need to perform resistance training or exercise.
- Main Outcome
- Functionality evaluated through Gait speed, Timed-up-and-go test, 6min walk speed and Short physical performance battery Strength evaluated through the Grip strength test and Chair stand test. Muscle quantity evaluated through the Appendicular skeletal muscle mass, Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass Index, Muscle mass and Legs muscle mass Nutritional status evaluated through the Weght, BMI, Serum albumin level and mini Nutritional Assessment
