- Title
- Global prevalence of LEAD and its association with risk factors in the 21st century (2000-2021) a systematic review and meta-analysis
- Review Question
- What are the prevalences of LEAD in the general population worldwide and by region in the 21st century? What are the risk factors associated with LEAD in the general population and by region in the 21st century?
- Study Type Included
- Studies were included if they were published after 1st January 2000 and peripheral artery disease was defined as ABI<0.90.
- Condition Being Studied
- Lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) is the third most common cardiovascular disease but its epidemiology is evolving. Variations of smoking habits and metabolic syndrome may affect the prevalence of LEAD in fact, while in the last century men who smoked were most at risk, in the 21st century new profiles, such as diabetics, people living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and women, also appear to be at risk
- Participant
- Inclusion: Adults from the general population with a measurement of ABI. Exclusion: Participants under 18 years old.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- The ankle brachial index must have been measured and calculated for all study participants in order to make the diagnosis of LEAD.
- Comparator Control
- None.
- Main Outcome
- PAD is defined by an ABI<0.9 and an ABI>1.4 suggests noncompressible calcified vessel. Determine the prevalence of LEAD in the population. Measures of effect Prevalences.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Hypertension, Diabetes, Dyslipidemia, Obesity and Tobacco consumption in participants with PAD. Association between risk factors and PAD. Measures of effect Odds-ratio
- Study Method
- Epidemiologic, Systematic review
