- Title
- The impact of lead exposure during pregnancy on pregnancy and birth outcomes: A Systematic Review
- Review Question
- 1. Pregnant women and foetuses exposed to lead.
- Study Type Included
- This systematic review will include all retrospective or prospective observational studies, including cross-sectional, case-control, nested case-control, case-cohort, and cohort studies, which have evaluated the association between the exposure and outcome(s) of interest.
- Condition Being Studied
- Lead, or plumbum (Pb), is a ubiquitous element and an excess of which can have significant adverse effects on human health. Thus, plumbism is a continual public health concern in particular for vulnerable populations including, pregnant women, children, socioeconomically disadvantaged sub-groups, populations residing in proximity of lead smelters, and First Nations populations. Previous studies have reported that maternal lead exposure during pregnancy may be associated with the risk of miscarriage.
- Participant
- Pregnant women and foetuses exposed to lead.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Lead exposure during pregnancy or in utero.
- Comparator Control
- Studies comparing women with lead exposure during pregnancy to women without lead exposure during pregnancy will be included. Additionally, studies comparing the severity of lead exposure during pregnancy (e.g., higher blood lead concentrations compared to lower blood lead concentrations) will also be included.
- Main Outcome
- The outcomes of interest for this systematic review are adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes, including gestational hypertension (e.g., preeclampsia and eclampsia), gestational diabetes mellitus, miscarriage or spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, infant mortality, preterm birth, low birth weight, small for gestational age, intrauterine growth restriction, and congenital abnormalities.
