- Title
- Prevalence, cause and diagnosis of lactose intolerance in children aged 1-5 years: a systematic review of 1995-2015 literature
- Review Question
- What is the prevalence of primary and secondary lactose intolerance among children 1-5 years of age in different countries and populations around the world? Is there any specific age of onset of primary lactose intolerance in specific populations? What are the causes for secondary lactose intolerance in children 1-5 years? How is the diagnosis of primary or secondary lactose intolerance established?
- Study Type Included
- We will include randomized trials, observational and retrospective studies using the following inclusion and exclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria: 1. Specifically addresses lactose intolerance (infants/children 1-5 years of age, genetic risk, prevalence / incidence, timing of diagnosis, method of diagnosis, effects and symptoms, relationship to dietary patterns) 2. Focus on consumption of cow’s milk and related issues including CPMA and GI symptoms 3. Mentions transient or secondary lactose intolerance 4. Refers to lactose intolerance may be or is likely to be as a cause or component of another “plausible” disease/disorder/symptom (e.g. colic, gastrointestinal infections) Exclusion criteria: 1. Age range outside of research questions (for title/abstract screening, must be 0-5 years (if age range 4 - >5, exclude), and not preterm) 2. Specifically addresses or implies lactose intolerance but focused on treatment/management (including pre/pro-biotics and guidelines for feeding) 3. Specifically addresses lactose intolerance but focused on “implausible” relationship to other diseases (e.g. hypothyroidism) 4. Does not appear to address lactose intolerance in any manner (e.g. may be focused on unrelated/general food allergies, intolerances, sensitivities, or other identified issues with milk/milk abstinence etc.) 5. Pre-clinical/animal study, does not involve humans 6. Case study/ies 7. Primary focus is on another disease (eg autoimmune diseases, etc.) 8. Publication is not in English 9. Not a peer-reviewed publication 10. Replication/duplication of previous publication
