Title
Effects of lactose-free formula on the treatment of acute diarrhea in children:a meta-analysis
Review Question
To compare the clinical outcomes of lactose-free formula with lactose containing formula for treatment of children suffering from acute diarrhea.
Study Type Included
The history of antibiotic therapy is excluded. Children who had major systemic infections, severe malnutrition, shock or who suffer from an underlying disease that needs other special treatment were excluded.
Condition Being Studied
Diarrhea is defined by WHO as having three or more loose or liquid stools per day, or as having more stools than is normal for that person. Diarrhoea is one of the leading causes of death among children under five globally. It is recognized that people with diarrhoea may occur lack lactase, especially in Asia. But there is currently no appropriate consensus on the use of milk containing lactose or lactose-free.
Participant
The type of studies will be randomized controlled trials. The type of participants are children younger than three years old who have acute diarrhoea, either inpatients or outpatients.Acute diarrhoea is defined as having three or mo loose or liquid stools per day,or as having more stools than is normal. The duration of diarrhea should be less than two weeks.Trials that were studied patients who had bloody stools are excluded.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
The intervention group should use milk products with less than 2% lactose. It would be accepted that both group used fluid infusion, corrected electrolyte imbalance and acid-base disturbance and(or) received probiotics, mucosal protective agents.
Comparator Control
The control group should use milk products containing at least 2% lactose and the children who were previously breast-fed should suspend breast milk.
Main Outcome
Treatment failure rates and duration of diarrhea. Measures of effect Treatment failure is defined as worsening property of stools or clinical symptoms(rehydration, vomiting) and(or) stool amounts exceeding three times per day, or outpatients had to be hospitalized. Duration of diarrhoea is defined as time to improvement of diarrhoea.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Weight gain. Measures of effect Weight gain referred to the weight change from admission to the end of the study.
Study Method
Intervention, Meta-analysis
