- Title
- Validating the Instruments and Methodologies Used for the Quantification of Kynurenine Pathway Metabolites in Biofluids: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
- Review Question
- 1. What is the most feasible instrument used to detect kynurenine pathway metabolites in human biofluids? 2. Are the methodologies used to detect kynurenine pathway metabolites in human biofluids validated and diagnostically accurate?
- Study Type Included
- Clinical studies which included a healthy control group or analytical studies including only healthy adults will be included. Studies which profile tryptophan or kynurenine in clinical cohorts only and did not include a healthy control group will be excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- This systematic review and meta-analysis studies the analytical profiling of the essential amino acid tryptophan, and kynurenine, a major metabolite of the kynurenine pathway.
- Participant
- Inclusion criteria pertaining to participants/population include clinical studies which included a healthy control group, or analytical studies which included only healthy adults. Exclusion criteria pertaining to participants/population include studies which explored tryptophan and kynurenine in clinical cohorts only and did not include a healthy control group.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- This systematic review and meta-analysis seeks to analyse data obtained from observational studies only. Studies that profiled tryptophan or kynurenine following an intervention such as tryptophan loading/depletion, or a dietary/nutritional intervention, will be excluded from analysis.
- Comparator Control
- Since this systematic review and meta-analysis will be focused on observational studies, no comparator/control will be used.
- Main Outcome
- Main outcomes include: an analysis of variance in instrument sensitivity, as ascertained by a one-way ANOVA followed by Turkey's multiple comparison test; and the critical appraisal of methodological quality, as ascertained using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Assessment (Metabolomics; QUADOMICS) Tool.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Not applicable as appropriate to the review.
