- Does the addition of potassium nitrate to the bleaching agent reduce tooth sensitivity after bleaching?
- Review Question
- Does the addition of potassium nitrate to the bleaching agent reduce tooth sensitivity after bleaching?
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion: We will include randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that compare pain during probing and/or scaling and root planning with intra-pocket anesthesia versus placebo in adult patients of any age group. The intensity of pain will be the primary outcome of the study. We will include only parallel or split-mouth clinical trials in humans. Exclusion: Non-controlled clinical trials, editorial letters, pilot studies, historical reviews, in vitro studies, cohort, observational and descriptive studies, such as case reports and case series will be excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- Tooth Bleaching; tooth sensitivity; and tooth discoloration are being studied.
- Participant
- Inclusion criteria: Adults patients with discolored teeth and patients who want to whiten their teeth. Exclusion criteria: Patients who have restorations in anterior teeth, younger than 18 years, using analgesic or anti-inflammatory drugs, reporting spontaneous tooth sensitivity, with non-carious cervical lesions, with tetracycline stains, and pathological conditions, such as dental caries, or need for endodontics or orthodontics.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Dental bleaching with the addition of potassium nitrate to the bleaching agent.
- Comparator Control
- Dental bleaching without the addition of potassium nitrate to the bleaching agent.
- Main Outcome
- Risk of tooth sensitivity at any moment during bleaching and intensity of tooth sensitivity on any pain scale (VAS, NRS, Heft Parker, etc.).
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Degree of color change in shade guide units and in delta E, immediately after bleaching (up to 1 month post-bleaching). If long-term results are available, data from available studies will be synthesised for similar time periods.
