Review Question
What is effect of different berries consumption on metabolic syndrome outcomes?
Study Type Included
We will include randomised-controlled trials (both parallel and cross-over study design) to measure the effects of different berries on metabolic syndrome outcomes.
Condition Being Studied
This review will focus on metabolic syndrome parameters as main outcomes. The outcomes are: 1) Waist circumference 2) Blood pressure 3) Fasting triglycerides 4) Fasting HDL-c 5) Fasting blood sugar.
Participant
This study will involve free-living men and women (aged from 18 to 70 years) with metabolic syndrome defined as having three or more of the following conditions: 1) waist circumference over 40 inches (men) or 35 inches (women) 2) blood pressure over 130/85 mmHg 3) fasting triglyceride (TG) level over 150 mg/dL 4) fasting high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level less than 40 mg/dL (men) or 50 mg/dL (women) 5) fasting blood sugar over 100 mg/dL The inclusion criteria are who did not take any medications, vitamins, and/or supplements. The exclusion criteria are those with dietary restrictions or conditions other than MeTS and women who are pregnant or lactating were.

Intervention
This review will include the following interventions: 1) Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) 2) Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) 3) Cranberries (Vaccinium oxycoccus or Vaccinium macrocarpon) 4) Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum( 5) Blackberry (Rubus ulmifolius) 6) Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) 7) Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) 8) Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) The test meals can be either in the form of liquid, semi-solid, solid or is taken as a part of meal (eg. breakfast cereal + strawberry juice).
Comparator Control
The appropriate control/comparators(s) should be either one or a combination of the following: 1) containing artificial flavour mimicking test food 2) containing artificial colour mimicking test food 3) containing same energy content as test food 4) containing same food matrix as test food.
Main Outcome
This review will measure the effect size (Cohen's d) between treatment versus control of the following outcomes: 1) waist circumference 2) blood pressure over 3) fasting triglyceride (TG) level 4) fasting high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level 5) fasting blood sugar. Measures of effect An effect size of 0.2, 0.5 and 0.8 are considered as small, medium and large, respectively.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
A change from baseline (before) and after treatment. Measures of effect The change in item 25 will be measured as percentage (%) change.
