- Title
- Effectivity of Isoflavones in the Treatment of Postmenopausal Symptoms : Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
- Review Question
- 1. How is the efficacy of phytoestrogen, specifically isoflavones, on vaginal dryness in postmenopausal women? 2. How is the efficacy of phytoestrogen, specifically isoflavones, on dyspareunia in postmenopausal women?
- Study Type Included
- Systematic literature search was carried out using MEDLINE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Central Register of Random Controlled Trials to obtain randomized (RCTs) that investigated the effect of 12 weeks of isoflavones treatment on vaginal dryness and dyspareunia in postmenopausal women. We did not set any restrictions on language or publication time. However, we excluded case series, case reports, reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analysis, editorials, letters, book chapters, study protocols, non-clinical/pre-clinical studies (in vitro, cadaver, animals) and conference abstracts in which a full report was unavailable.
- Condition Being Studied
- The best possible approach to the management of menopausal symptoms is to address each woman’s needs and symptoms individually. Estrogen as a hormonal therapy has been used for so many years to treat menopausal symptoms. However there are conditions where hormonal therapy is no longer recommended as in patients with cardiovascular disease, a history of thromboembolic events, breast or uterine cancer, or liver disease. Phytoestrogens are plant-based substances that bind to estrogen receptors, and have weak estrogenic and anti-estrogenic activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of phytoestrogen, specifically isoflavones, on vaginal dryness and dyspareunia in postmenopausal women.
- Participant
- We included randomized control trials of a comparison between groups before and after isoflavones treatment and the effect on vaginal dryness and dyspareunia in postmenopausal women.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- The intervention was 12 weeks of isoflavones therapy to postmenopausal women with menopausal symptoms, specifically vaginal dryness and dyspareunia.
- Comparator Control
- The control group is postmenopausal women with vaginal dryness and dyspareunia symptoms before given the isoflavones treatment.
- Main Outcome
- The main outcomes were improvement in symptoms (participant-assessed). We combined data to calculate Mean and Standard Deviation (SD). Statistical heterogeneity was assessed using the I² statistic.
