Title
The prebiotic potential of inulin-type fructans: a systematic review
Review Question
Do inulin-type fructans (ITF) exhibit prebiotic functionality?
Study Type Included
Controlled, clinical trial. Parallel or cross-over.
Condition Being Studied
No conditions
Participant
Inclusion: Healthy adults without diagnosed disease; individuals with overweight, obesity, prediabetes, irritable bowel syndrome. Exclusion: Animal/in vitro studies, infants/children (<18y), pregnant women; individuals with diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, constipation, non-syndromic disease
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Inulin-type fructans, not in combination with any other bioactive components. Including inulin, oligofructose, fructans, fructooligosaccharides from chicory, artichoke, and agave.
Comparator Control
Placebo or control not involving inulin-type fructans.
Main Outcome
Microbiota outcomes include taxonomic abundances, microbial load, and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Health outcomes include mineral absorption, bone health, weight and body composition, glucose homeostasis, lipid profile, inflammation, blood pressure, laxation, satiety, and energy intake. Measures of effect Not applicable. A qualitative comparison of effects will be used.
