- Title
- The efficacy and safety of inulin supplementation for functional constipation:a systematic review protocol
- Review Question
- 1. Does inulin supplement have an advantage in improving the frequency of bowel movements (completely spontaneous bowel movements per week) in patients with chronic idiopathic constipation? 2. Are there any side effects and adverse reactions during the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation by inulin supplement?
- Study Type Included
- We will include randomised controlled trials (RCTs).
- Condition Being Studied
- FC is a common functional gastrointestinal disease and one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases of outpatients. The incidence of constipation in the world is about 15%. FC does not threaten the life of the patient, but it seriously affects the patient's quality of life (QOL) and causes high medical expenses. The occurrence of constipation is inversely related to the intake of dietary fiber (fruits, vegetables). A low-fiber diet can induce constipation. Currently, medical treatment is not satisfactory in continuously improving the symptoms and quality of life of FC patients, and side effects such as electrolyte disturbance, diarrhea, and nausea are often reporte. Inulin is a kind of water-soluble dietary fiber, which is a kind of polysaccharide. It is not digested and absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract in the body. Due to the improvement of stool quality and frequency, in 2003, the US FDA has confirmed inulin as a recognized safe substance. Studies have shown that inulin can improve constipation by adjusting intestinal flora. At present, some clinical trials have shown the advantages of inulin in treating constipation. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a meta-analysis to further evaluate the effectiveness and safety of inulin in the treatment of functional constipation.
- Participant
- Inclusion criteria: 1. Whether or not to use blinded randomized controlled trials (RCT); 2. Including patients diagnosed with functional constipation, regardless of age, gender and race; 3. Use inulin alone or in combination with other drugs (food); 4. The control group can receive any conventional therapy; and report data on the efficacy and safety of the treatment.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Inulin-type fructans (including natural inulin, oligofructose or inulin HP) provided in diets / specific foods or as dietary supplements can be used alone or in combination. We will consider an RCT with a minimum duration of 7 days for intervention.
- Comparator Control
- The control group included placebo, no intervention, acupuncture, massage, Chinese herbal medicine, diet therapy, exercise therapy, Western traditional medicine (WCM) or any other intervention.
- Main Outcome
- The main efficacy indicators include clinical effectiveness and CSBM number. Safety indicators include liver and kidney function, blood routine, and also include adverse events during treatment, such as abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, rash, headache, constipation, bradycardia, skin disease and flatulence Wait. Measures of effect Time of measurement will not be restricted.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- 1.Patient Assessment of Constipation symptom(PAC-SYM); 2.Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life Questionnaire(PAC-QOL); 3.Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS) and Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS); 4. Transit time measurement (radiopaque markers), functional rectoanal evaluation (proctoscopy, anorectal manometry, defecography, cinedefecography), or electromyography (EMG); 5. Number and types of adverse events. Measures of effect Time of measurement will not be restricted.
