- Title
- Efficacy of inulin supplementation on insulin metabolism in patients with type 2 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
- Review Question
- We will discuss whether inulin improves the condition of insulin metabolism among T2DM patients.
- Study Type Included
- Only RCTs were included and cross-over double-blinded or triple-blinded RCTs also be included.
- Condition Being Studied
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus, as a noncommunicable disease, is the main public health challenge in the 21st century. And it also accounts for 90%-95% of cases with diabetes, is a chronic disorder characterized by impaired metabolism of glucose and lipids due to impaired insulin secretion (beta cell dysfunction) or action (insulin resistance)
- Participant
- We enrolled the patients who were diagnosed as type 2 diabetes, and patients in intervention group received inulin but not in control group. Also, studies involving pregnant patients or patients younger than 18 years old will be excluded.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- The inulin in the intervention group is our target. The form of inulin in the intervention group could be: chicory enriched, oligofructose-enriched or included in synbiotic bread. The content of inulin ranges from 1.08g to 30g.
- Comparator Control
- The control group did not apply inulin but with maltodextrin, inulin placebo or control food.
- Main Outcome
- If there will be the decreasing of insulin and the improvement of HbA1c and HOMA-IR, the inulin is beneficial for T2DM patients in insulin metabolisim. Measures of effect The duration of included trials were from 6 weeks to 12 weeks. SMD values close to 0 (P > 0.05) indicated no statistical significance. In contrast, SMD was considered statistically significant when it was away from 0 (P<0.05).
