Efficacy and tolerability of ingenol mebutate in actinic keratosis of the face or scalp: systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
What is the efficacy of ingenol mebutate gel in face/scalp actinic keratosis, compared to placebo or other treatment? What is the tolerability of ingenol mebutate gel in face/scalp actinic keratosis compared to other treatment?
Study Type Included
We will include human clinical trials. We will not include case reports and case series studies.
Condition Being Studied
Actinic keratosis is a sun-related skin condition and is one of the most common reason for consulting a dermatologist. It is a premalignant skin condition which can develop into squamous cell carcinoma.
Participant
Inclusion criteria: Adults (18 years of age and above), 4-8 clinically typical, visible,discrete Aks within a contiguous 25cm2 treatment area on the face or scalp. Exclusion criteria: Target treatment area within 5cm of an incompletely healed wound, or within 10cm of a suspected basal cell or squammous cell carcinoma, presence of atypical lesions, recent use of medication or other procedures that could interfere with the evaluation of the treated area (e.g. topical medication, immunosuppresive agents, etc.).

Intervention
We will include clinical studies which have evaluated ingenol mebutate gel vs placebo or other therapies, for the treatment of actinic keratosis.
Comparator Control
Placebo/vehicle intervention or treatment other than ingenol mebutate (e.g. photodynamic therapy).
Main Outcome
Rate of complete clearance (CC).

Additional Outcome
Severity of local skin reactions (LSR).
