- Title
- Dietary medium chain triacylglycerols versus common dietary lipids for weight loss and waist circumference reduction in adults: systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
- Review Question
- The present review aims to answer the following question: “Do adults who ingest medium chain triacylglycerols achieve greater weight loss and waist circumference reduction when compared with those who ingest common dietary lipids?”
- Study Type Included
- We will include randomized controlled trials with either parallel or cross over design. Any other type of study will be excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- Body composition. Dietary therapy.
- Participant
- Inclusion: Adults with a Body Mass Index higher than 18.5 kg m-². There will not be restrictions of sex, race or comorbidities. Exclusion: Adolescents (under 18 years of age); Individuals under enteral or parenteral nutrition.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Medium chain triacylglycerols are medium chain (from 6 to 12 carbons) fatty acid esters of glycerol, which have specific metabolic characteristics in its digestion, absorption, transport and oxidation processes. It will be included in our analysis studies where individuals were advised to replace at least 10g of dietary lipids with medium chain triacylglycerols (~80 kcal). This amount is equivalent to 5% of the energy from a nominal 1600 kcal diet.
- Comparator Control
- Common dietary lipids are composed essentially by long chain triacylglycerols which may be found in great amounts in the majority of foods like meat, eggs and milk. It will be included in our analysis studies where the control group was advised to maintain a regular diet or to ingest any regular oil such as olive, soybean or canola oils.
- Main Outcome
- Body weight, measured in kilograms; Waist circumference, measured in centimeters. Measures of effect Effects measures will be taken as the difference between final values and baseline values for each outcome in each group.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- None. Measures of effect None.
