- Title
- Antimicrobial effects of hypericin and pseudohypericin: a systematic review.
- Review Question
- What are the known antimicrobial therapeutic potentials of hypericin and pseudohypericin for in vitro and in vivo models of fungi, parasites, viruses and bacteria? Context and rationale Hypericin and pseudohypericin are important active compounds found in Hypericum sp. They can be isolated from the plants of this family or be synthetically produced. These substances have plenty of therapeutic uses and hypericin is also one of the strongest photosensitizing agents with natural occurrence. Their role in depression is well settled, however these compounds have been tested against several different microorganisms that affect humans, though these works have not been summarized yet. Considering the promising properties of hypericin/pseudohypericin against microorganisms is important to unify the information to better understand the potential of these substances. The in vitro and in vivo methodologies are the basis of experimental studies. Therefore, studies of hypericin/pseudohypericin against fungi, parasites, virus and bacteria of medical interest that improve in vivo and in vitro methodologies will be the focus of our systematic review.
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: For animal and in vitro studies: Controlled studies with a separate control group (experimental studies) Exclusion criteria: For animal and in vitro studies: Observational studies (cross-sectional, case-control, cohort), cross-over studies, studies without a separate control group, case studies and clinical trials.
- Condition Being Studied
- Participant
- Animal
- Inclusion criteria: For animal studies: Studies with fungi, virus, bacteria or parasites capable of affecting human that apply in vivo methodologies with mammalian animals. For in vitro studies: Studies with fungi, virus, bacteria or parasites capable of affecting human that apply general in vitro methodologies. Exclusion criteria: For animal and in vitro studies: Studies and results with humans or human experimentation will not be included in the review.
- Human Disease Modelled
- All types of viruses, mycoses, bacterial infections and parasitic diseases of medical interest that can be found in research
- Intervention
- Inclusion criteria: For animal studies: In vivo drug treatment with hypericin or pseudohypericin in fungi, virus, parasites and bacteria. Either synthetic or plant isolated compounds (from Hypericum sp.) will be included. For in vitro studies: In vitro drug treatment with hypericin or pseudohypericin in fungi, virus, parasites and bacteria. Either synthetic or plant isolated compounds (from Hypericum sp.) will be included. Exclusion criteria: For animal studies: Drug treatment with compounds other than hypericin or pseudohypericin isolated from Hypericum or from any other source. Drug treatment with hypericin or pseudohypericin in humans. Drug treatment with hypericin or pseudohypericin to treat/evaluate immunological, tumoral, depressant diseases or any disorders caused by reasons other than the presence of fungi, parasites, bacteria and parasites. For in vitro studies: Drug treatment with compounds other than hypericin or pseudohypericin isolated from Hypericum or from any other source. Drug treatment with hypericin or pseudohypericin to treat/evaluate immunological, tumoral or any disorders caused by reasons other than the presence of fungi, parasites, bacteria and parasites.
- Comparator Control
- Inclusion criteria: For animal studies: Other possible pharmacological or non-pharmacological interventions utilized as comparison for the hypericin/pseudohypericin effect in the animals that we can possibly find in the selected articles; control groups (non-treatment); vehicle-treated; placebo-treated. For in vitro studies: Other possible pharmacological or non-pharmacological interventions utilized as comparison for the hypericin/pseudohypericin effect in vitro methodologies; control groups (non-treatment); vehicle-treated. Exclusion criteria: For animal and in vitro studies: Other controls conditions.
- Main Outcome
- Outcome Measure
- Inclusion criteria: For animal studies: Antimicrobial effect on fungi, parasites, viruses and bacteria. For example: Inhibitory concentrations of hypericin/pseudohypericin for specific microorganisms; signs of clinical improvement in animals infected with specific pathogens. For in vitro studies: Antimicrobial effect on fungi, parasites, viruses and bacteria. For example: Inhibitory concentrations of hypericin/pseudohypericin for specific microorganisms. Exclusion criteria: For animal studies: Cytotoxic effect of the analyzed substances, antidepressant activity, antitumor activity or other therapeutic effects that do not include antimicrobial action. For in vitro studies: Cytotoxic effect of the analyzed substances, antidepressant activity, antitumor activity or other therapeutic effects that do not include antimicrobial action.
