Effects of Huperzine A on Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment: an Overview of Systematic Reviews
Review Question
What is the efficacy and effectiveness of Huperzine A in the treatment of dementia and mild cognitive impairment?
Study Type Included
All systematic reviews and/or meta-analysis generated from clinical trials that have assessed the efficacy of Huperzine A on Dementia (Alzheimer’s disease or Vascular dementia) or mild cognitive impairment will be included. Systematic reviews that have examined the effect of all types of herbal medicine on dementia and have not specifically examined the effect of Huperzine A will be excluded. We will only include reviews published in the English language.
Condition Being Studied
Dementia (Alzheimer’s disease or Vascular dementia) or Mild Cognitive Impairment
Participant
Adults, 18 years or older with dementia (Alzheimer’s disease or Vascular dementia or both) of any severity or patients diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment will be included.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
We will include all reviews in which Huperzine A was taken as an intervention, either alone or with combination of other drugs regardless of manufactures, preparation form, length of treatment, and dosage of Huperzine A which have been used for treatment.
Comparator Control
Placebo, no treatment, routine treatment or other pharmacological interventions.
Main Outcome
Main outcomes for overview of reviews: Cognitive performance Activity of daily living (ADLs) Global clinical assessment (Global function) Quality of life Safety (Adverse effects) Measures of effect Mwasures of effect will be mean difference or standardized mean difference, or weighted mean difference, or least square mean difference for continuous data, and the relative risk (RR) or odds ratio (OR) for any dichotomous outcome.
