Huperzine A for major depressive disorder: a review of the literature
Review Question
The aim of this review is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Huperzine A in the treatment of major depressive disorder (any diagnostic criteria).
Study Type Included
Randomised controlled trials, open labels, case reports, and case series will be included.
Condition Being Studied
Huperzine A, an alkaloid initially identified from the Chinese herbal medicine Huperia serrata, is a potent reversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor and has been shown to have cognition-enhancing effects in animal models and patients with Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. We will evaluate the efficacy and safety of adjunctive Huperzine A in the treatment of major depressive disorder using any diagnostic criteria. There were no restrictions regarding language, sample size, or time period.
Participant
Patients using antidepressive drugs.

Intervention
Huperzine A plus antidepressive drugs.
Comparator Control
Antidepressive drugs plus placebo or antidepressive drugs monotherapy.
Main Outcome
Cognitive effect assessed by any instrument.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
1) Changes in scores of Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale Total (BPRS) total score from baseline to end of treatment. 2) Adverse events. 3) Discontinuation.
