- Title
- Is histamine-2 receptor antagonists use a risk factor for infection, necrotizing enterocolitis and mortality in neonates?
- Review Question
- Is histamine-2 receptor antagonists use a risk factor for infection, necrotizing enterocolitis and mortality in neonates?
- Study Type Included
- Case-control studies, cohort studies and clinical trials.
- Condition Being Studied
- Histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RA) are frequently prescribed off-label to neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICU). Some studies show that the use of H2RA may predispose to infections in adults and older children, and possibly necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) in neonates, but this association has not been systematically examined.
- Participant
- Inclusion: all neonates hospitalized in a NICU who have or have not been exposed to ranitidine treatment. Exclusion: neonates born from mothers with trans-placental infection potential (i.e. human immunodeficiency virus, syphilis, hepatitis, toxoplasmosis, rubella and cytomegalovirus), neonates with congenital malformation (i.e, hydrocephalus, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, meningoencephalocele, hydronephrosis), and neonates with genetic syndromes.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Neonates who have been exposed to histamine-2 receptor antagonists.
- Comparator Control
- Neonates who have not been exposed to histamine-2 receptor antagonists.
- Main Outcome
- The rate of infections in neonates exposed or not to treatment with Histamine-2 receptor antagonist. Measures of effect Odds ratios.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- The occurrence of NEC, mortality, and hospital stays. Measures of effect Odds ratios.
