Title
Meta-analysis of Cordyceps sinensis in the treatment of lung cancer
Review Question
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the available data on the efficacy and safety of Cordyceps sinensis in the treatment of lung cancer and to assess the quality of the combined evidence.
Study Type Included
Included clinical trial study designs will be limited to randomized controlled trials. Studies involving the following criteria will be excluded: (1) duplicate studies; (2) inappropriate interventions; (3) incomplete data; (4) irrelevant to outcome measures.
Condition Being Studied
Lung cancer is the most common cancer, the second most successful diagnosis in the world, and the leading cause of cancer-related death. Lung cancer is divided into small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer according to histopathology. In terms of treatment, small cell lung cancer is generally not limited to local areas and rarely undergoes surgical resection. Most of them are treated with chemotherapy. Patients with small cell lung cancer are more likely to undergo surgery in combination with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. The treatment of advanced lung cancer is usually based on chemotherapy and histology, but in the past decade, targeted therapy and immunotherapy have also begun to be widely used due to the discovery of predictive biomarkers. However, these therapies still have limited efficacy and even toxicity, and the challenge of finding better treatments continues.
Participant
Experiments that will be included in this study are all randomized controlled trials involving lung cancer that needs to be diagnosed by biopsy or postoperative pathology. The number of patients is expected to be greater than 800.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
The experimental group was given Cordyceps sinensis on the basis of radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
Comparator Control
The control group was given radiotherapy or chemotherapy
Main Outcome
The primary clinical outcome included in this study will be tumor response rate (TRR), i.e. complete response (CR), partial response (PR), stable disease (SD) and disease progression (PD). CR plus PR will be included in the database as objective response rate (ORR), and ORR plus SD will be included in the database as clinical benefit rate (CBR). A secondary outcome will be physical condition: an increase of ≥10 is considered improvement according to the Karnofsky Functional Scale (KPS) score; a decrease of ≥10 is considered ineffective; a change of <10 is considered stable. The higher the score, the better the quality of life. In addition, there are immune function indicators, including serum CD4 and immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM); adverse drug reactions, mainly gastrointestinal reactions; and the incidence of radiation pneumonitis after radiotherapy. Measures of effect Risk ratio (RR) will be used to evaluate dichotomous outcomes, while mean difference (MD) will be used to evaluate continuous variables.
