- Title
- Cardiac glycosides and the risk of prostate cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies
- Review Question
- Cardiac glycosides are used to treat heart failure and supra-ventricular arrhythmias and are reported to be associated with estrogen-sensitive cancers such as breast cancer or uterus cancer. However, reports on the association between cardiac glycoside use and prostate cancer risk have been inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the association between cardiac glycoside use and prostate cancer risk by conducting a meta-analysis of case-control and cohort studies.
- Study Type Included
- Observational studies (case-control, nested case-control or cohort studies).
- Condition Being Studied
- Cardiac glycosides (digoxin and digitalis) are phytoestrogens and are frequently used in clinical settings. Some estrogen-sensitive cancers such as breast cancer and uterus cancer have been reported to be linked to the use of cardiac glycosides. However, evidence on the association between cardiac glycoside use and prostate cancer risk have been inconsistent. We aimed, therefore, to perform a meta-analysis to explore this association.
