Review Question
Which oral bowel preparation regimen provides a better cleansing for elective outpatient colonoscopy: sodium picosulphate (PICO) or polyethylene glycol (PEG)?
Study Type Included
Randomized clinical trials studying oral bowel cleansing, comparing sodium picosulphate and polyethylene glycol regimens for cleansing effectiveness and tolerability. Retrospective studies will be excluded.
Condition Being Studied
Cathartics / bowel preparation solutions for colonoscopy.
Participant
Outpatient adults (18 years or older) scheduled for elective colonoscopy who have undergone bowel cleansing at home or at clinic.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
PICO. Regimens based in the sodium picosulphate arm, with or without adjuncts or dietary restrictions, for bowel cleansing before colonoscopy. Studies involving combinations of two or more different products in the same regimen (sodium picosulphate, polyethylene glycol, mannitol or sodium sulphate) or associations with enemas or enteroclysis, will be excluded.
Comparator Control
PEG. Regimens based in polyethylene glycol arm, with or without adjuncts or dietary restrictions, for bowel cleansing before colonoscopy. Studies involving combinations of two or more different products in the same regimen (sodium picosulphate, polyethylene glycol, mannitol or sodium sulphate) or associations with enemas or enteroclysis, will be excluded.
Main Outcome
Bowel cleansing success, defined as the number of patients with successful cleansing of the bowel by the study or by the assessment score used and categorized as excellent, adequate, good or clean. Measures of effect Measurement at the time of colonoscopy.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Tolerability (or adherence to the bowel cleansing protocol), defined as the number of patients who have ingested the entire bowel cleansing preparation or the minimum established by the study as acceptable. Adverse events prevalence, defined as the number of patients who experienced any symptoms, discomfort, signs or adverse events due to colon cleansing. Polyp detection rate, defined as the number of patients with at least one polyp detected during colonoscopy. Adenoma detection rate, defined as the number of patients with at least one adenoma detected during colonoscopy. Measures of effect Measurement at the time of colonoscopy and after histopathological evalution is completed.
Study Method
Meta-analysis, Systematic review
