Condition Being Studied
Cirrhosis is characterized by fibrosis and nodule formation of the liver, secondary to a chronic injury, which leads to alteration of the normal lobular organization of the liver. Cirrhosis is currently the 11th most common cause of death globally and liver cancer is the 16th leading cause of death; combined, they account for 3.5% of all deaths worldwide. Despite the tremendous amount of progress in our understanding of the etiology of liver cirrhosis, worth considering cases are cryptogenic, i.e. cirrhosis of the liver of undetermined etiology. This is true especially in Sub Saharan Africa, where hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and alcohol consumption are involved in 34%, 17%, and 18% of cases as an etiologic factor. However, in 31% of cases, the etiology is unknown, according to a recent global burden of disease report. It is, therefore, our review aims to assess any association between the glutathione S-transferase (GSTM1, GSTT1, and GSTP1) polymorphisms and the risk of liver cirrhosis.
