Title
The effect of Lepidium meyenii polysaccharide on fatigue: a systematic review
Review Question
Is the Lepidium meyenii polyisaccharide capable of reducing fatigue in endurance exercise?
Study Type Included
Control case studies will be included with the population defined in the previous item. Studies that show differences in the type of endurance test (running, swimming or cycling) may be included as long as they have the same defined study design. We will also include studies that have used substrates other than polysaccharide so that we can evaluate if some type has better results in reducing fatigue.
Condition Being Studied
Lepidium meyenii, scientific name of Maca, is a plant native to the Peruvian Andes, found exclusively at altitudes greater than 3500 meters. It has recently been studied for its pharmacological properties related to energetic improvement and sexual dysfunction, reduced fatigue, increased fertility and inhibition of benign prostatic hyperplasia. The use of the polysaccharide before the practice of the exercise could result in changes in production and in the degradation of factors associated with muscle fatigue.
Participant
Criteria for the participants: athlete men from 20 to 40 years of age, practicing endurance sports Inclusion: sports like swimming, marathon running and cycling Exclusion: strength sports; athletes who are not high performers
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Two groups of athletes will be studied: those who will receive the polysaccharide for a given time (case group) compared to those who will not receive the substance (control group). Participants will undergo an endurance test until exhaustion. The review will compare the laboratory (glucose, urea, CK and LDH dosages) results obtained in the case group and in the control group after performing the exercise. In addition, the time of exercise to exhaustion will be compared between the two groups
Comparator Control
The type of substrate used by each review may also be compared, assessing whether there are relevant differences in the test results of the case groups. In addition, the dosages used by each study and its respective results will be evaluated, and there may be a control group (without the use of the polysaccharide) compared to more than one case group (different dosages of the polysaccharide)
Main Outcome
Participants in the case and control groups will be evaluated after the endurance exercise proposed in each study. It is expected that the group that used the polysaccharide will be able to perform the exercise for a longer time than the control group. In addition, this group is expected to have lower dosage of CK, urea and LDH, confirming the hypothesis that Lepidium meyenii alters the fatigue process. Measures of effect Time of use of the polysaccharide before the test: about three weeks Blood collection for evaluation of parameters: immediately after the end of the exercise
