- Title
- Glucosamine sulphate: an umbrella review of health outcomes
- Review Question
- The aim of this umbrella review is to summarize all health outcomes that are associated with the use of glucosamine sulphate (GS) in human beings.
- Study Type Included
- We will include systematic reviews with or without formal meta-analysis that evaluated observational studies with longitudinal (prospective or retrospective) design reporting on health outcomes in subjects taking GS versus those not taking this medication and not taking any other similar medication (e.g. chondrointin sulphate). We will include systematic reviews with or with formal meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in which at least one group used GS and one placebo.
- Condition Being Studied
- GS is traditionally used for knee osteoarthritis. However this will be an umbrella review summarizing all the possible health outcomes. Therefore, any condition requiring GS will be considered.
- Participant
- No restrictions regarding participants and populations will be posed.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Glucosamine sulphate, at any dosage.
- Comparator Control
- Placebo for RCTs and not taking GS for observational studies.
- Main Outcome
- All health outcomes (e.g. pain, function, disability rate) will be considered as primary/co-primary outcomes Measures of effect According to the original article, we will extract single study-specific risk estimates (i.e., mean difference, standardized mean difference, risk ratio, odds ratio, hazard ratio, or incident risk ratio, or other reported effect sizes) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs),
