- Title
- The cancer risks of glucosamine containing nutritional supplements: a systematic review and meta-analysis
- Review Question
- Could there be an association between glucosamine nutritional supplements consumption (in dietary supplements) and cancer?
- Study Type Included
- Included studies follow the inclusion criteria established: (1) case cohort, case report, or nested case control studies; (2) involve histologically-confirmed cancers; (3) include information on the association of glucosamine nutritional supplements and cancer; (4) report hazard ratio (HR) or relative risk (RR) or number of cases and controls; and (5) consistent in experimental methods across different studies. Studies are excluded based on the exclusion criteria: (1) reviews, letters, incomplete work/studies, or conference reports; (2) duplicated studies; (3) work with insufficient data in assessing cancer effects of glucosamine nutritional supplements (i.e. less than 95% CI in HR or RR); (4) studies involving cell lines or animal models; (5) studies evaluating the association of glucosamine nutritional supplements and cancer mortality; and (6) studies with experimentation methods deviating significantly from other studies selected.
