- Title
- Effects of glucosamine and chondroitin supplements on symptomatic temporomandibular joint disorders: a systematic review
- Review Question
- What are the effects of glucosamine and chondroitin supplements compared to other therapies, placebo, or no intervention among patients with symptomatic temporomandibular joint disorders?
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion: Observational studies and clinical trials. No time and language restriction will be applied.Exclusion: Reviews, case-reports, protocols, conference abstracts, personal opinions, letters, posters, and laboratory research.
- Condition Being Studied
- Temporomandibular joint disorders are characterized as a group of conditions associated with painful symptoms and disability of the joint and masticatory muscles. Regarding pharmacological therapies, there are protocols targeting pain and inflammation reduction and rehabilitation of joint functions. Analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are considered palliative treatments, and can cause several side effects with prolonged practice. Moreover, the use of structure-modifying agents, such as glucosamine and/or chondroitin supplements, is discussed, as they could be a viable alternative for pain management and function recovery with considerably fewer collateral effects.
- Participant
- Inclusion: Individuals diagnosed with symptomatic temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders Exclusion: Studies in which members of the sample had craniofacial anomalies, genetic syndromes, or neuromuscular diseases; Studies that included subjects under 18 years old; Studies that included cases with comorbidities as bruxism, fibromyalgia, migraine and other headaches, otalgia, sleep apnea, and rheumatoid arthritis or other arthropathies.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Inclusion: Studies that investigated the effects of oral administration of glucosamine and/or chondroitin supplements among patients with symptomatic TMJ disorders, diagnosed through the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) or based on the diagnostic criteria established by the American Board of Orofacial Pain (ABOP). Exclusion: Studies using diagnostic tool other than RDC/TMD or the ABOP diagnostic criteria; Studies in which patients were receiving concomitant analgesics or anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Comparator Control
- Inclusion: Other therapies, placebo, or no intervention. Exclusion: Studies with no control group; Concomitant treatment of TMJ disorders with other agents or methods.
- Main Outcome
- Pain improvement. Measures of effect Assessments of pain will include quantitative methods such as Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Numerical Analogue Scale (NAS), or other validated reported pain intensity scale.

- Additional Outcome
- Function recovery.
