Title
Systematic review and meta-analysis of lactose intolerance; the global, regional, and national prevalence in adults and children aged 10 years or older.
Review Question
The objective is to present an updated systematic review and meta-analysis on the global, regional, and national prevalence of lactose intolerance, estimate the global burden, and assess variation in estimates between different methods.
Study Type Included
We will evaluate studies presenting prevalence data of lactose intolerance (LI) or lactase persistence (LP) including cross sectional and prospective studies using genotyping, hydrogen breath test (HBT), lactose tolerance test (LTT) or other methods. Studies with no prevalence data, no data on the number of participants, insufficiently described methodology, or potential bias of the population, which doesn't represent a general population, will be excluded.
Condition Being Studied
Lactose intolerance in adults and children aged 10 years or older.
Participant
Inclusion: Studies presenting data on the prevalence of lactose intolerance or lactase persistence among adults and children aged 10 years or older. Exclusion: Studies using self-reported data and inpatients and outpatients at gastrointestinal wards and studies in children younger than 10 years old. Additionally, Studies with no prevalence data, no data on the number of participants, insufficiently described methodology, or potential bias of the population, which doesn't represent a general population, will be excluded.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
No intervention will be studied directly. A variety of methods will be used for determining lactose intolerance (LI) or lactase persistence (LP), including genotyping, hydrogen breath test (HBT), lactose tolerance test (LTT), and urinary galactose excretion.
Comparator Control
We will compare studies using genotyping, hydrogen breath test (HBT), lactose tolerance test (LTT), or other methods.
Main Outcome
Prevalence of lactose intolerance.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Estimate prevalence of lactose intolerance globally, regionally, and nationally. Estimate the global burden, and assess variation in estimates between different methods.
Study Method
Meta-analysis, Systematic review
