- Title
- Citrus Flavanones and Experimental Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
- Review Question
- To correlate the protective role of citrus flavanones against Alzheimer's disease in rodents. Context and rationale Notwithstanding several studies have been conducted to evaluate the pharmacological action and mechanisms of Naringin, naringenin, hesperidin and hesperetin in animal models for Alzheimer’s disease, there is no comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis on the benefical role these citrus flavanones in Alzheimer's disease.
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: Case-control studies; Controlled studies with normal control and Alzheimer'disease control groups. Exclusion criteria: RCTs; cross sectional studies; studies without separate control groups
- Condition Being Studied
- Participant
- Animal
- Inclusion criteria: All rodent animal models, with no restriction on species, age, or sex Exclusion criteria: Disease model; Alzheimer's disease
- Human Disease Modelled
- Alzheimer's Disease (AD), a chronic central nervous system degenerative disease characterized by progressive cognitive dysfunction, mental impairment, and emotional abnormalities.
- Intervention
- Inclusion criteria: Intervention included citrus flavanones (only naringin, naringenin, hesperidin and hesperetin were included); no limit to dosage form, frequency and dosage. Exclusion criteria: Intervention that include co-administration of other medicines along with citrus flavanones (naringin, naringenin, hesperidin and hesperetin).
- Comparator Control
- Inclusion criteria: Control include animal models of Alzheimer's disease receiving no treatment, blank or/and sham-operation. Exclusion criteria: Controls which have taken other interventions in addition to citrus flavanones (naringin, naringenin, hesperidin and hesperetin).
- Main Outcome
- Outcome Measure
- Inclusion criteria: (a) oxidative stress markers (SOD, GSH and MDA levels、catalase activity). (b) enzymes concentration (acetylcholinesterase levels). (c) Nitrite levels. (d) cognitive functions parameters(The Morris water maze test and the Y-maze test was used to evaluate cognitive functions in animal models). Exclusion criteria: (a) oxidative stress markers (SOD, GSH and MDA levels、catalase activity) were not measured before and after intervention. (b) enzymes concentration (acetylcholinesterase levels) and nitrite levels were not measured before and after intervention. (c) cognitive functions parameters(The Morris water maze test and the Y-maze test was not used to evaluate cognitive functions in animal models).
