- Title
- The effects of flavanols on blood pressure and vascular function in patients with diabetes mellitus: a meta-analysis
- Review Question
- What is the effect of flavanols, extracted from the cocoa bean, on blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) and vascular function in patients with diabetes mellitus?
- Study Type Included
- Randomized Controlled Trials
- Condition Being Studied
- Cardiovascular complications in diabetes mellitus.
- Participant
- Inclusion: diabetes mellitus, human (men and women), all ages Exclusion: animals, cells In case of mixed populations (only part of the participants are diabetes patients) articles will be included but will be placed in a subgroup.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Randomized Controlled Trials in which patients are given a certain amount of flavanols, extracted from the cocoa bean, in any form (chocolate bars, capsules, powder, etc.). These interventions may be acute or chronically.
- Comparator Control
- Randomized Controlled Trials in which the control population do not get a certain amount of flavanols in any form. The control population do or do not get a placebo (any type of placebo is allowed, the only condition is that it has to be free of flavanols).
- Main Outcome
- Change in blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) after the intake of a flavanol-rich substances (capsules, chocolate bars, powder, etc.). There are no conditions set up about how these measurements have to be executed (holter monitoring, single measurement, etc.). Measures of effect The blood pressure measurements had to be performed before and immediately after the intake or during the hours following the intake. The measurements have to start at latest 6 hours post intake.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Vascular measurements like flow-mediated dilatation, arterial stiffness, pulse wave velocity etc., which can be used to partly explain the blood pressure changes. Measures of effect The measurements had to be performed before and immediately after the intake or during the hours following the intake. The measurements have to start at latest 6 hours post intake.
