- Title
- The role of 600mg N-acetyl-cysteine orally daily on the sperm parameters and serum hormones in idiopathic infertile men: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
- Review Question
- The effect of 600mg N-acetyl-cysteine orally daily on the sperm parameters and serum hormones in idiopathic infertile men from meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
- Study Type Included
- RCT;The following studies were excluded: not RCT, such as abstract, review, or comment; patients with urogenital bacterial infection, smoke, hypogonadism, varicocele, the use of drugs and other comorbidities; other treatment.
- Condition Being Studied
- Infertility is a disease that it is incapable to become pregnant after at least 1 year of regular unprotected intercourse, and male factors accounting for nearly half of the reported patients are considered to be secondary to testicular dysfunction or reproductive tract occlusion. Oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly active oxidants that can be classified as endogenous or exogenous according to their sources, which may lead to spermatogenesis defects and male infertility. Currently, physiological and genetic factors may also be related to sperm function and the occurrence of infertility. In particular, oxidative stress (OS) is considered to be an important factor affecting male fertility and sperm physiological function. Under normal conditions, the active oxygen produced by male sperm is less, which is necessary for normal sperm function (sperm activation, capacitation, acrosome reaction) and natural fertilization. Pathological ROS production results in lipid peroxidation of male spermatozoa, reduces the quality of semen and damages sperm DNA by forming single and/or double. Reducing excess ROS production is very important for sperm to maintain normal function and fertilization ability.
- Participant
- The sperm parameters of patients with primary infertility were normal. According to the history, physical examination and semen examination results, there were no factors that might affect male infertility. This study only included patients with idiopathic infertility with normal sperm parameters, and there were no previous factors that could affect male fertility, failed attempts at conception and no female factors.
