Review Question
Are high levels of homocysteine ​​and cysteine ​​associated with cardiovascular risk factors in children and adolescents? PICOS: P (Population): children and adolescents; I/E (Intervention/Exposure): high levels of homocysteine ​​and cysteine; C (Comparator): appropriate levels of homocysteine ​​and cysteine; O (Outcomes): cardiovascular risk factors; S (Study type): observational studies.
Study Type Included
Inclusion: we will only include observational studies that present results of statistical analysis between homocysteine and cysteine levels (exposition variable) and cardiovascular risk factors (outcome variables) in children an adolescents. Inclusion criteria summary: • Study design: observational; • Study population are children and adolescents; • No time criteria will be used for published studies; • Exposition: homocysteine and cysteine high levels; • Comparison: homocysteine and cysteine normal levels. Exclusion: interventional studies; clinical trial studies; in vitro and in vivo studies; review studies and / or case reports; studies that do not evaluate the outcome.
Condition Being Studied
Evidence that chronic diseases in adulthood are shaped in childhood and adolescence are consistent. Thus, in recent years, many studies have been devoted to the identification of cardiovascular risk factors during childhood and adolescence, in which they have been designed with increasing tendency and already constitute an important cause of morbidity in this life cycles, being highlighted obesity, dyslipidemias and arterial hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Several studies have pointed to homocysteine and cysteine as markers for cardiovascular diseases, whose plasma values may contribute to early identification of cardiovascular risk, since hyperhomocysteinemia and hypercysteinemia have been shown cardiovascular risk factors independent of the others. Studies of children and adolescents have indicated that even in the pediatric age group, elevated homocysteine levels are associated with elevated systolic blood pressure and weight gain. In addition, levels are higher in children who have a parent, grandfather or uncle with early death from cardiovascular disease. Although evidence suggests that hyperhomocysteinemia and hypercysteinemia are risk factors for cardiovascular disease in adults, there is little information on homocysteine and cysteine levels in adolescents. Studying this relationship becomes indispensable, contributing to early identification of cardiovascular risk in this ages groups and primary prevention of other chronic diseases in adulthood.

Inclusion: children and adolescents.

Intervention
High homocysteine and cysteine high levels and the association with the development of cardiovascular risk factors in children and adolescents (overweight, obesity abdominal, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, serum lipids, insulin resistance and glucose levels).
Comparator Control
We will compare the prevalence or mean values of the cardiovascular risk factors (overweight, obesity abdominal, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, serum lipids, insulin resistance and glucose levels) in the group exposed to the high levels of homocysteine and cysteine and the group non-exposed.
Main Outcome
The outcomes for this study include the relative risk (OR) or the mean value of fasting blood glucose; HOMA-IR, plasma insulin, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c); low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c); total cholesterol (TC); triacylglycerol (TAG); very low density lipoprotein (VLDL); systolic blood pressure (SBP); diastolic blood pressure (DBP); body mass index (BMI); waist circumference (WC). Measures of effect Relative risk (RR), prevalence ratio (PR) or odds ratio (OR) with their confidence intervals (CI) for categorical risk estimates; mean values ​​and standard deviation or correlation coefficient with respective p values ​​for continuous variables.
