Title
Antidiabetic effect of eugenol: A meta-analysis of animal studies.
Review Question
Is the use of eugenol effective in treating diabetes in murine models? Context and rationale Over the last decades, studies have described several activities of eugenol over diabetes treatment. Even though, the knowledge about its effects is still scarce, which difficults the understanding of its mechanism of action. In addition, a deep and specific meta-analysis of the effect of eugenol over diabetes treatment has yet to be done. Therefore, we believe that this meta-analysis will shed light on the real potential of eugenol as an antidiabetic so that we can consolidate it as a potential medicine for human use.
Study Type Included
Inclusion criteria: All study types are eligible as long as they have a diabetic control group and a eugenol-treated diabetic group. Exclusion criteria: Studies published in journals with impact factor less than 1.
Condition Being Studied
Participant
Animal
Inclusion criteria: In the meta-analysis, we will include only rodents (rat and mouse) as an animal model of induced-diabetes. Regarding the type of diabetes, both type1 and 2 diabetes will be included in the searching. Exclusion criteria: It will be excluded no rodent animals.
Human Disease Modelled
Diabetes mellitus type 1 or type 2.
Intervention
Inclusion criteria: We will include studies using clove extracts, clove oil, eugenol purified from plant extracts, as well as eugenol purchased from commercial laboratories. We will include treatments using this compound in different concentrations, routes of administration, frequency of treatment and time. Exclusion criteria: Studies in which it was not clear the presence of eugenol during the treatment.
Comparator Control
Inclusion criteria: Experimental studies with control (diabetic animals) and treatment (diabetic animals treated with eugenol) groups. Exclusion criteria: Studies with absence of one of these groups.
Main Outcome
Outcome Measure
Inclusion criteria: Studies must have reported means , sample size, and mesure of variance ( standard deviation, standard error or confidence interval) for both control and treament groups. Exclusion criteria: Studies with no means, no sample size, and no measure of variance (standard deviation, standard error or confidence interval) for both control and treatment groups.
